Triumphant Tutoring

Triumphant Tutoring?

Yes!

When a shy first grader finally raises her hand to read aloud with confidence and competence, that’s Triumphant!

When a nineteen-year-old senior who’s been held back finally earns B's in Pre-algebra and graduates, that’s Triumphant!

When a rising fourth grader with Attention Deficit Disorder is at risk of repeating the third grade - due to failing the EOG twice - finally passes the test “with flying colors”, that’s Triumphant!

This is truly Triumphant Tutoring!

Hi, I'm Donna Bice.

For as long as I can remember, I've always loved to learn!

As a full-time mother, part-time childcare provider, and part-time teacher, I found it easy to encourage curiosity and natural to engage children in learning.

Over the years, I’ve developed keen sensitivity and the ability to tune-in to a child’s nuanced way of learning. I'm able to adapt my teaching approach to the individual's learning style. Each child senses my genuine respect for them, and we become a team with common long-term and short-term goals. I make it clear that I’m coaching them in a safe space where all attempts are encouraged, appreciated, and appraised constructively. All successes are celebrated! I sense when she or he feels tired or frustrated, and we take a short, fun, constructive break. Often we stand up and do some sort of easy aerobic exercise to get the blood flowing to our brains. We might find something to make each other laugh to lighten the mood and bring oxygen to our heads too!

With years of experience and a contagious love of learning, I am here to help your child excel and move past their educational road-blocks, allowing them to build strong study habits and confidence, and to flourish in school and beyond!

If you’re searching for a Tutor who can provide you with customized service and your child with personalized instruction, look no further. I make house calls, or we can meet at a nearby library.

I have been offering my services as a Tutor since 2000 and have a proven record of success!

This is truly Triumphant Tutoring!

Let's Begin

Here's a brief description of how we'll get started:

Happy Student

Private Phone Conversation

Before we meet in person, I prefer to have a private phone conversation so you’re able to voice any concerns and specific challenges without potentially embarrassing your child.

I care deeply about privacy and draw on my years of experience in medical offices, HR, and education to treat all information with respect and confidentiality.

Introductory Session

During our first session, we’ll all chat, keeping conversations positive. We will talk a little about goals, and make sure the tutoring area suits our needs for quiet, lighting, etc.

When you and your child both feel ready, you'll leave the room to reduce performance anxiety.

Feel free to sit around the corner and listen, if you'd like!

I will then spend the remainder of our time building rapport with the student while becoming familiar with their way of processing information, especially in the subject that's challenging them. We'll likely spend time with their school materials and my teaching tools.

This introductory session may be kept light and fun for a younger child or might dive into specifics for an older student, but either way, my initial approach for teaching them can be determined from what I learn at this first meeting.

Teacher and Young Student

Book Your First One-on-One Session

Assuming you and your child decide to work with me, we will hit the ground running at our next tutoring session!

For many students, completing homework is the "only" thing we do. However, before and during schoolwork completion, a lot of learning and reinforcement happens!

After quickly looking over the assignment, we talk about how well they understand it. If necessary, I teach the concepts in a conversational manner and demonstrate how to work through similar problems. I then let them try their homework while I watch and answer their questions. I gently call attention to any mistakes immediately. If the student doesn't see it or can't fix it, we discuss why and how.

School work is top priority, unless told otherwise. I always have enough learning materials with me to fill an entire hour, in case there's little or no homework that day.

Going forward, I'll remain sensitive to the learner. I'll tweak my teaching tools and modality as needed, and keep you apprised of progress and any concerns (verbally at the end of each session).

I welcome feedback - including constructive criticism - and am willing to make some changes to benefit the student and your family.

One-on-One Lessons

Pay-by-the-hour sessions tailored to your student's academic needs

From grades prekindergarten through 12, I tutor a range of subjects:

  • Reading / Reading-Readiness

  • Mathematics (including Algebra I, Geometry, Statistics)

  • Writing & English / Language Arts

  • Social Studies

  • Science (through 8th Grade)

Test Prep - Standardized & Otherwise

Customized study intensives to fit your student's needs

When it’s time to take a test, some children have a hard time remembering information they’ve learned in class or while reading. Other kids have a hard time understanding some of the questions on certain tests. Still others’ minds seem to simply shut down because it’s time to take a test. Regardless of the test-taking issues your student faces, I have extensive practice with various strategies that have helped kids and myself overcome these and other school performance challenges. With multiple 60-to-90-minute sessions, I will coach your student how to prepare his or her brain to receive, retain, and recall information; how to assist the mind to focus rather than freeze; and importantly, how to choose what information to study and how to learn it well.

Also: I can connect you with a local, very successful SAT tutor.

College Admission & Scholarship Essays

Proofreading, editing, and formatting that increases successful admissions

With my experience in writing, I was able to assist my children in gaining admission to the colleges of their dreams. I'd be honored to help your student do the same!

Chauffeur Services

...are available in order to make tutoring sessions possible

Many families are busy, running several children to various activities after school. Adding tutoring sessions simply would be impossible. As a Tutor/Nanny, and as a full-time mother, I’ve had many years of experience taking kids places on time and a great, accident-free driving record. I’d be happy to help make tutoring your child possible by committing to the once or twice weekly pick-ups or drop-offs.

You have the need; I have the expertise.

Success Stories Begin Here...

“Donna was able to help our son tackle some of the difficulties he was having. She was always able to guide him in the right academic direction, even if he didn’t want to go there.  Donna has a special way with children, a calming effect, that allows them to absorb what is necessary for their schoolwork.”
